Bunionectomy
A bunion is a common condition that affects many individuals. It is an enlargement of the joint at the base of the big toe, usually consisting of both bone and soft tissue. Not only is it painful, but it can also cause the big toe to deviate or angle towards the other toes. This causes less stability of your toe while walking and can ultimately cause loss of bone density to weaken the foot. Unfortunately, the only way to treat bunions is through surgery. The good news, however, is the surgery is simple, quick, and has minimal recovery time.
Dr. Jenson is proud to use special endoscopic and arthroscopic techniques to surgically fix the enlarged joint. He simply makes a small incision at the area of concern, often using a camera to find the exact location of prominence. He then uses special surgical instruments to shave off the excess bone. Often, an advance absorbable pin is placed to maintain the proper anatomy and angulations of the toe. These pins are state-of-art pins that absorb right into the surrounding bone within 120 days, thus requiring no removal. Making sure the area is smooth with no irregularities, Dr. Jenson finishes up the procedure by cleaning the incision site and placing sutures.
This is considered an outpatient surgery, so the patient is able to go home within an hour. The surgery itself only takes a couple of hours and is usually done so in a private surgical center or hospital.
One of the best benefits of this procedure is its recovery phase. Immediately following surgery, the patient is transferred into a special surgical shoe, which is smaller than most boots. They do not require big, bulky dressings seen in other cases. The patient is required to limit their activities for one week before coming into the office for a post-operative visit. At this time, the patient is given a bunion splint used to correctly maintain the alignment of the joint. Once again, limited activity is requested to provide optimal results with no complications. Once a few weeks go by, the patient comes back in to have everything removed and gets transferred into shoes with no restrictions.
